CHAIN LINK FENCING

CHAIN LINK FENCING • FENCE INSTALLATION & REPAIR

Chain link fencing is a type of woven fence, most often made from galvanized or polyethylene-coated steel wire. This wire is run vertically and then bent into a zig-zag pattern, with the wires wrapping back and forth around each other, creating the diamond pattern that is so characteristic of chain link fencing. You may also hear chain link fencing referred to as wire netting, wire-mesh fencing, chain-wire fencing, cyclone fencing, hurricane fencing, or diamond-mesh fencing. Chain link fencing comes in a variety of sizes, ranging from 3′ tall to12′ tall. The diamond mesh can also range in size, though 2″ is standard.

fun fact about fencing

FUN FACT ABOUT CHAIN LINK FENCING

The first company to patent a manufacturing process for chain link fencing was from right here in Massachusetts. That’s right! Guy Mafera, the owner of the American Chain Link Fence Company in Medford, MA, filed a patent for “an exclusive manufacturing process of continuous wire fabric” back in the mid-1980s. While Mafera’s wire fabric was initially used to make spring beds, his brother later patented a different method of manufacturing which made chain link fencing safe and practical for residential use. Neat, huh?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CHAIN LINK FENCING

Many people have questions about chain link fencing. Below are some of the common questions we get asked all the time, but if you don’t see your question below, please contact us! We’re happy to answer any questions you have about chain link or any other type of fencing.

What is chain link fencing made out of?

Chain link fencing is produced in massive rolls, and is usually made from either galvanized steel, polyethylene-coated steel, or aluminum.

What is the gauge of the wire?

When we talk about the gauge of the wire in a chain link fence, we’re talking about the diameter of the wire. The higher the gauge number, the smaller the wire. The most common gauge sizes are 6, 9, 11, and 11.5. For residential applications, 9 gauge is the most commonly used size. When security is the primary concern, 6 gauge is preferred.

What type of coating is available for chain link fencing?

There are several options available, including galvanized or vinyl coated. Galvanizing requires the steel wire be coated in zinc, which is an effective way to prevent rusting or corrosion. Vinyl coated wire may be produced using a variety of methods, including Spectra and Permafused II. Vinyl coating adds a layer of protection, and also gives you the option of adding color.

Does chain link fencing require concrete footings?

No, chain link fencing posts just need to be driven into the ground by 4′. This makes for a faster and easier chain link fence installation process. The gate or terminal posts may need concrete footings, depending on what you’re using the fence for and the condition of your soil. We will determine the need for concrete footings when we come out for your free estimate!
